Original artwork, dreamy sunsets, swans on the river and the best wines in the world…Villa Shambhala is a feast for the senses and a truly unique and exceptional place to stay.

The mesmerising Dordogne River is literally at the villa’s feet at the bottom of a set of steps and life on the river is very much at the heart of this home – swans glide along the water, wildlife comes and goes, locals pass by on canoes, whilst others try their luck at fishing.

Understandably, Villa Shambhala takes full advantage of this prestigious setting with plenty of outdoor spaces to soak in all the beauty. The fountain garden with table and chairs is the perfect place to sit and watch the river activity whilst sipping coffee and reading a book. The roof terrace treats guests to spectacular sunsets over the river at ‘apéritif’ time. There is also a new ‘salle d’été’ and additional  terraces to while away the hours sipping local wine in the sunshine or under the star-filled sky.

Villa Shambhala also benefits from its own private swimming pool, set in an enclosed courtyard reached via the salle d’été.

Inside, the villa showcases the owner’s creative flair and artistic talent. Original paintings adorn the walls and the décor is stylish and elegant. When in residence, the owner who has an art studio (discretely tucked away) and who is also a wine expert.

From the villa, a 20-minute drive will take you to charming Saint-Émilion, where world class restaurants sit beside ancient ruins. The fabulous city of Bordeaux, with its new ‘Cité du Vin’ is a must see town and only an hour away.

Villa Shambhala is a rare find. Where natural beauty and man-made beauty work in harmony to create the most perfect holiday experience.

The welcoming climate and stunning scenery of the Dordogne encourage exploration, and the region has many treasures to delight wine connoisseurs, gourmets, artists and activity enthusiasts alike.

Make the most out of the Dordogne river and enjoy the many outdoor activities such as boating, canoeing, fishing, bird-watching and a lot more.

The chic bustle of St Emilion, only twenty minutes from Shambhala, offers stylish boutiques, contemporary fine art and world class restaurants. Following the Dordogne and Lot waterways will reward the explorer with many new delights, as charming villages and market towns such as Bergerac, Souillac and Cahors were established through trade along their banks.

Bordeaux is an elegant city filled with architectural delights. The visitor can enjoy the narrow streets of the old town, stunning 18th Century mansion houses, the neoclassical theatre and wide boulevards lined with boutique shops in this diverse and attractive city.

Along the Dordogne are many fine chateaux such as Beynac and Monpazier, mainly built for military action against England during the 100 Years’ War. Each summer only ten minutes from Shambhala a dramatic battle re-enactment is held at Castillon de Bataille (July and August). The home of the philosopher Michel Montaigne is only 10 minutes away, and there are fine Gallo-Roman mosaics to be seen in the neighbouring village of Montcaret.

The traditional French hamlet location is a peaceful centre from which to explore the region, with excellent amenities close by.

The local village of Pessac is just along the Dorgogne where you can take a coffee, drink and pick up fresh croissants and papers while enjoying the beautiful countryside, vineyards, apple orchards and walnut groves. When you reach the village there is a small supermarket, boulangerie, tobacconist, hair salon and two restaurants. Slightly further out you have Castillon and Sante Foy that have larger supermarkets and various markets throughout the week which specialise in local produce.

The nearby Chateau Bauduc, favoured by Gordon Ramsay and Rick Stein, is a must for wine connoisseurs and offers a programme of tours and tastings, with private visits by arrangement. Wine tours of the many local vineyards are a wonderful chance to sample world-renowned names. Chateau Monbazillac is at Bergerac and St Emilion, Cahors and others are all nearby, offering a chance to sample outstanding wines on the soil where the grapes are grown.

To accompany the wines are many famous traditional cheeses, truffles, mushrooms, duck and goose delicacies such as foie gras. The wealth of gourmet produce makes this area a paradise for foodies, who will be delighted by the local markets of Castillon, Sante Foy and Libourne. This passion for fine produce is reflected in the many excellent restaurants throughout the region.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Experiential art company ‘Live in Art’ has launched a series of new residential art courses taught by acclaimed French contemporary artist Eric Bourse.

The location of the courses is Live in Art’s first permanent ‘living gallery’ space and studio, the luxurious Villa Shambhala on the banks of the beautiful Dordogne river in south west France. With its dedicated art studio and gallery space, direct private river access and only 20 minutes from world UNESCO site Saint-Emilion, it’s the perfect spot for an inspirational weekend of painting and wine tasting in the Dordogne.

Take full advantage of the expert teaching techniques of Eric Bourse who will offer you a personal guidance in developing skills and personal style through the versatile medium of acrylics. All abilities are welcome – beginners wanting a taster session to start them on their painting journey or more experienced painters who want to develop their style and technique. All materials and equipment needed to take part in the course will be provided with a small canvas completed to take home at the end of the course.

The art studio at Villa Shambhala has been developed under Eric’s direction and is hung with Eric’s own work, as well as used as his own working space. Villa Shambhala is also hung as a ‘living gallery’ of Eric’s work and other French contemporary artists.

Please note the art studio is a private area with a separate access to it.

  • Our family have had the most amazing time

    on 24/10/2023

Our family have had the most amazing time. From long walks along the river, to dinner and wine in the evening, to DVD nights on the sofa, every single thing has been special in its own way.
The recommendations have been absolutely brilliant, from St Emilion's wine tasting to the town where we dined out.
It has been a very beautiful trip which will stay with our family for a lifetime and the fact it was our 10-month old son first trip abroad makes it all the more special.
    Thank you!

  • Perfect

    on 17/10/2023

    Perfect house. Beautiful place.

  • The setting is dreamy

    on 29/09/2023

The setting is dreamy, the house an authentic French countryside/fabulous accommodation and being on the Dordogne river with the swans floating by and the birds singing made our experience something we would like to repeat again and again.
And to discover Eric's fabulous art studio and purchasing one of his paintings means we are taking back to our home in California a bit of France with us.
We look forward to seeing you again!

  • Absolutely Beautiful

    on 22/03/2023

Our family had the most amazing time at Villa Shambhala.

It is such a beautiful location with a relaxing feeling all around the Villa and surrounding area. We made an itinerary so that each day we knew what we were going to do, what town we would visit and what restaurants we would eat it in. We were not disappointed the places we visited were like a movie.

One of the evenings we decided to come back and cook at the Villa and watch a film in the evening and that too was just as great.

Overall it was a really lovely time and could not of asked for a better holiday.

  • We really couldn't ask for more

    on 28/05/2022

Well, where to start? It has been such a long journey through the pandemic for us to get here, 2 years and 3 postponements later, here we are at the end of our stay!
It takes a special place to not only give something to look forward to for 2 years, but to live up to those expectations when we arrived.
Villa Shambhala is certainly a little bit of paradise, we have seen wonderful wildlife, enjoyed fabulous food and wine and beautiful scenery. We really couldn't ask for more.

  • Charming home!

    on 29/04/2022

Thank you for such a great hospitality at this very charming home in picturesque setting. We were fortunate to have absolutely gorgeous weather during our Easter holiday and therefore spent much of our days enjoying the outdoor areas of the property.
We loved walking to Domaine La Tourbeille for a tour of the vineyard & wine tasting (~45 mins walk). We also had a very memorable dinner cooked by chef Jane, highly recommended.

    on 28/09/2018

The Villa is amazing. The location cannot not be beat. The owner was fantastic and offered a private tour through the resident artist studio which was extremely moving. The artist's talent is on display throughout the Villa which makes it even more of a special experience. The location of the Villa is beyond amazing.

  • Wonderful house in lovely quiet situation!

    on 01/09/2018

Beautifully fitted out. Masses of space for hanging out private and safe for children. The river is over the quiet road with private garden which is a delight. We had use of the pool, renting Petite Shambhala as well for a family holiday which was icing on the cake. Kit and Eric were delightful hosts.

  • Sharron, Jonathan and children April 2016

    on 12/06/2016

Our stay at Villa Shambhala was a really welcome break, the house is beautiful with great size rooms and a warm welcoming living room with doors opening out on to a terrace overlooking the river. The weather wasn't kind but the location was, amazing views, vineyards galore and a restaurant to walk to. We made use of the bikes provided, we went fishing in the river, we had lovely walks. It is a perfect place to relax and unwind after the long drive down. At night the log fire was a great focal point for us to sit around and play games or chat and even watch a DVD.
It is difficult to put a negative point down about the house, if anything it would be the lack of a pool, but we believe that may be on its way.
Great holiday and we would love to go back.

  • Villa Shambhala - Holiday Heaven

    on 07/06/2016

The villa is set in a beautiful location on the banks of the river Dordogne and deep in the heart of Bordeaux wine country. Holiday heaven was achieved sitting in the beautiful surroundings either inside with all the gorgeous furnishings or outside in the salle d’été – which is an outside dining area with every facility provided. Exploring the area is a delight; visiting markets, bastide towns and the wine country. All provide the setting for some fantastic photographs. The villa has all the amenities provided; serious sunbathers will have their pick of terraces to lounge on and pedal bikes are there for anyone who would like to explore further. All the travel and car hire arrangements went without a hitch so thanks to Flora for arranging it all so well. Thank you to Oliver’s Travels for the holiday of a lifetime. You will not have a better holiday if you choose Villa Shambhala. I guarantee it.

  • It has been a delight from start to finish

    on 26/05/2016

Dear Kit, I would like to say thank you for the pleasure and privilege of staying in your wonderful villa. It has been a delight from start to finish. The area is beautiful and we have loved our time here. I have looked after your villa with love and care. Eve's artwork is a real bonus and you have birds nesting in the pot just outside the terrace doors. How did you arrange that? We are really grateful for your kindness and generosity.

  • We look forward to coming back!

  • Wonderful villa - Far exceeded my expectations

    on 13/03/2014

Villa Shambhala is truly breath-taking and far exceeded my expectations. The owner – Kit – could not have been more accommodating, welcoming us on arrival and showing us around. The villa is spectacular and finished to such a high standard, the kitchen is well-furnished and the beds so comfy that if it wasn’t for the beautiful surroundings you could easily stay in bed all day. Whilst there we made the most of walking along the river, borrowing bikes from the villa to cycle around the vine yards and sampling the delights of the local market. We had beautiful weather so had long lunches outside in the beautiful courtyard, then got the fire going in the evening for a snuggly night in. Perfect break, couldn’t recommend it more!

  • I love villa Shambhala!

    on 10/03/2014

Thank you Kit for a really super weekend at Shambhala. Everything was beautiful and so comfortable, and the views of the Dordogne from your terrace are out of this world. I wish you luck with your art projects with Eric Bourse. See you soon and expect many more bookings from us.

  • Villa Shambhala

    on 21/09/2013

Villa Shambhala is a real treasure; we are almost reluctant to leave a review and draw more attention to it (risking making it difficult to rebook)!
The beautiful villa is peacefully situated besides the serene Dordorgne and comes complete with mountain bikes and a rowing boat. The accomadation both inside and outside is excellent and very comfortable, spacious and stylish - perfect for larger groups.
A car is essential. We also used the train (Velines) for giving older teenagers some independence - they even travelled from Plymouth to Bordeaux (via Lille) and returned by train.
There are supermarkets about 20 minutes away and more wonderful local morning markets than you can cope with. We visited Bordeaux, Bergerac, Sarlat, St Emillion and numerous smaller towns with ease. We also hired canoes locally and spent an afternoon on the Dordorgne watching herons.
Kit is amazing and really helpful with advice for exploring the area and it's culture.
Thank you - we loved it!!

  • Amazing Stay

    on 30/04/2012

Yes, we enjoyed our stay tremendously! The villa was in impeccable condition, wonderfully decorated, clean and comfortable, with lovely outdoor spaces and a great view of the river. The villa was fully equipped, we had everything we needed (including a fully functional barbeque!) and instantly felt at home. We also found bikes in the shed and went for a wonderful bicycle ride along the river and surrounding fields! It was also great to meet the owner Kit Bentley, who was staying at the next door house at the time. She was exceedingly helpful and great fun to chat to over a glass of wine.

  • Fantastic Holiday

    on 30/04/2012

We have just returned from holiday in Villa Shambhala and would like to say that it is probably the best holiday accomodation that we have ever been lucky enough to stay in. It was superbly appointed and beautifully decorated throughout. The equipment provided both in the kitchen and outdoors was superb, there really is no need to bring a thing with you, there were even DVD's for the kids, bikes and a little boat - (although we did not use this due to the river being very high). The owners were wonderful and so helpful, even so far as providing a little welcome package for us when they realised that it would be impossible for us to shop on an Easter Sunday, the day of our arrival. We had a fabulous stay and will be back we hope with a larger luggage allowance to take back a few more bottles than the 3 that Air Lingus allowed us. Visit this region if you are interested in wine (obviously), architecture, walled towns, wildlife and peace and quiet - not a very kid friendly area unless your children are content to do these things (which thankfully ours were!).

  • Thank you so so much for an amazing stay
