Imagine the sophistication of a modern, airy Parisian apartment, set in a villa in the Dordogne. This is Manoir Altheas, a holiday villa built in 1800 and restored to the height of elegance. Each room embodies style, ease, and the indoor/outdoor life. You’ll admire the lush flower gardens surrounding the villa, and large windows that bring the fresh country air inside.
You’ll dine al fresco on the stone patio, where the classic sandstone and tile of the villa’s exterior feels like a step back in time. After dinner, take a stroll through the garden and orchard to the village of Lanquais - the auberge (restaurant and inn) is a 5 minute walk away. The most important local sight is Chateau de Lanquais, a designated historic monument dating back to the medieval period.
This villa is quite close to the Bergerac airport (it's only a 15 minute drive). The city of Bergerac is a hub of local wine production, full of fine restaurants, and you can even take in a follies-style show at Le Music Hall. You'll never want for things to do in the Dordogne - come and see!
In addition to the main house, there is also an independent and beautifully furnished one-bedroom cottage sleeping a further two guests.
This spacious annexe has its own separate entrance and does not affect the privacy of the main house. It has a double bedroom, shower room and an attractive open plan kitchen/living/dining room all finished to the same high standards as the main house.

Main House Interior
The house is very spacious, elegant and airy, with high ceilings, Italian marble floors, period features, beautiful wood floors upstairs and a magnificent, wide, circular wooden staircase.
Downstairs there is a modern shower-room with basin, WC and washing machine. The fully equipped kitchen is a very large room incorporating a living area with sofa and dresser, which opens out onto a large stone terrace overlooking the gardens.
The sitting room comes with an ornamental marble fireplace, 2 linen-covered sofas, TV cabinet with DVD player, large footstool, bookcase and other furniture. The dining room has a round table and chairs. Both rooms have high, beamed ceilings and antique painted furniture.
Upstairs bedrooms 1 & 2 have king-size beds, bedroom 3 has a double bed and bedroom 4 has 2 single beds. Bedrooms 1 and 3 both have en suite bath/shower rooms.
The beautiful, well-stocked gardens and small orchard, on different levels and backing on to open farmland, are a real feature of the property. There is plenty of garden furniture and a barbecue.

Independent and beautifully furnished one-bedroom cottage with its own separate entrance. It comprises of a double bedroom, shower room and an attractive open plan kitchen/living/dining room.
Location
About the surrounding area of Manoir AltheasThe nearest airport is Bergerac which is 15 mins drive, served by Flybe and Ryanair from the UK. Bordeaux airport is about 1hr 30 mins drive. The use of a car is recommended to explore the area fully. The port of Calais is approximately 8 hours 30 mins travel by car.
The market town of Lalinde (market on Thursday) is 8km away and has some very good food shops and a small supermarket. Bergerac is 18km away.
There are 4 good golf courses within easy striking distance. The magnificent Chateau des Vigiers Golf Course is approximately 30 km. This is a 27 hole par 71/72 course, built on 3x9 hole loops. It also has excellent restaurant facilities and club-house.
There is a small - but quite challenging - 9 hole par 35 course at Chateau les Merles, which is only 5 minutes by car from the house. Water hazards, bunkers and greens are all well maintained. This also has a very good bar/terrace and restaurant.
Golf La Marterie is in a stunning setting, about 40km from the house, at St Felix de Reilhac. This is an 18 hole par 73 course of high standards.
A little further is Domaine de Rochebois (57km) which is a 9 hole par 36 course. It has a varied circuit running along the Dordogne Valley with exceptional views. The well tended greens are protected by bunkers and stretches of water.

The beautiful, solid, golden sandstone walls and tranquil setting with its large garden on the edge of the quiet village of Lanquais.
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Visit the many vineyards in the area, complete with wine tastings, with regions such as Monbazillac, Pécharmant and Saussignac on the doorstep. Hire a canoe on either the Dordogne or Vézère rivers.
Really eat?
Confit de canard. Foie gras. Truffle omelette.
Really see?
The medieval Chateau de Lanquais – 8 mins walk..
The prehistoric caves of Lascaux and Les Eyzies – 45min/1 hour drive
Chateau des Milandes – home of the singer Josephine Baker – 40 min drive.
The world famous wine town of Saint Emilion – 1 hr drive.
The Bastide towns of Montpazier, Molières and Beaumont, all less than 30 mins drive.
The small medieval town of Issigeac with its wonderful Sunday market – 15 mins drive.
The larger medieval town of Sarlat with its shops and restaurants and Saturday market.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Look out for the lovely Redstarts and Black Redstarts feeding in the garden. The best local red wines of the area are from Pécharmant, some of the best local whites from Montravel.

Had a lovely time at Manoir Altheas.
Oliver's Travels provided excellent directions and information about the house and location. The property manager, Beatrice, is wonderful.
I was able to obtain a friendly and reliable taxi driver who took me wherever I wanted to go. The local restaurant (the only one in this tiny hamlet!) serves good traditional food.
Do be aware that the steps to the upstairs and main part of the house are steep and winding.
Better to travel lightly! -

Comfortable and relaxing
We just wanted to let you know what a wonderful time we had staying in your beautiful house. We loved all the little details of the interior décor and the house was very comfortable and relaxing. As wine lovers, it was fantastic to be so close to many top-quality vineyards which we enjoyed visiting. The garden is an absolute delight and completely private, backing on to farmland as it does. A real haven of peace. We will undoubtedly return.

We had the most fabulous stay at Manoir Altheas. It is I think the nicest gite we have ever stayed in, and we visit France relatively often. The house was really spacious and exquisitely decorated, some rooms looked as though they came straight from the pages of a magazine, and had pretty much everything we needed to look after ourselves when we stayed there. The garden too was an unexpected delight. Even in the rain we all sat for hours under the canopy just relaxing and taking everything in. I was slightly apprehensive that it might be a bit of a bind not having much to do in the village itself but we were all (from my 5 year old child to my 67 year father) happy to while away the time in the garden. The restaurant down the road was also great for a drink in the evening if we wanted to go out, and we also had two really great local meals there. I’d definitely recommend it. There is also so much to do in the local area, which is really beautiful in itself. Bearing in mind we were there out of season, we could’ve easily filled two weeks without having to travel more than 25km from the town. Lastly, we were so touched by the welcoming gifts Richard had left for us including a birthday gift for my daughter and a bottle of non alcoholic fizz for her birthday. It really made us feel welcome in their home. If you decide to visit I’m sure you will enjoy your stay.

We greatly enjoyed our stay. It is a perfect situation - in the heart of the stunning Dordogne but happily hidden away from the most touristy areas. We felt that it was a great privilege to feel as though we were staying in someone's beautiful home rather than a 'rental property'. Your home is so beautifully decorated and the garden was wonderfully peaceful - a real haven. We certainly hope to come again.
