Le Moulin Charmant is a beautifully converted mid-nineteenth century mill house bordering the Auvézère river just outside Hautefort in the Dordogne. It stands within 4 hectares of grounds and gardens in stunning countryside dotted with historic towns and villages.

This impressive conversion has resulted in a charming and beautiful home full of beautiful, personal touches, perfectly combining comfort and style. It offers a large traditional, well-equipped kitchen with dining table and spacious sitting area.

In addition, there is a wonderful covered terrace ideal for barbecues and outdoor eating. There is also a cosy sitting room with huge log burning stove and a large barn is attached to the end of the Mill, with table tennis and plenty of room for fun and games.

The Mill has a gated and heated outdoor swimming pool with charming pool house with balcony.

To make your stay both memorable and more relaxing the non-resident English speaking housekeeper is available to arrange additional services such as Cordon Bleu meals, a fridge stocking service, hampers, babysitting and maid service. Complimentary White Company soaps are provided in the bathrooms.

Located in the outskirts of the gorgeous traditional village of Toirtourac and just a few minutes drive from the lively town of Hautefort with a delicious boulangerie, a restaurant and bar as well as sport facilities, the Chateau is the perfect base to explore the beautiful Dordogne region.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
Since March 2016

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The secluded situation and the wonderful atmosphere of the house and grounds. It has the river L’Auveze running past the house and its own private Island with poplar avenues and fabulous Bamboo woods. Enchanting.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
There are many interesting and historic places around the Mill which are bursting with fascinating stories. The local village of Hautefort houses the most magnificent Chateau, where in the 17th and 18th centuries there were many historical events. The Mill itself we are researching and hope to find out much more about it. It was built in 1868 and has been very sensitively converted into a fabulous house by an English family who lived there for 35 years.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Not since we have owned it. Not Yet!

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

We have a drawer full of recommendations, lots that we have done and others that have been recommended to us. Hautefort is a must and only 5 minutes’ drive away (with the magnificent Hautefort Chateau, gardens and charming village (restaurant called Le Troubadore is fab).
Le Crouzille Fois Gras Shop and farm up the hill (walk or bicycle ride away) is definitely worth a visit and the award winning Boulangerie in Tourtoirac (3km) a must. Perigeaux (30mins drive) has a medieval part of the city and is beautiful and full of fascinating buildings, wonderful shops and restaurants.  There is a great evening market there on a Wednesday or Thursday (check before visiting).
There are truly wonderful gardens to visit within 45 mins (details in the house). Local kayaking is popular and can take you passed the house on the other side of the island.
There is a wonderful racecourse within an hour in the beautiful town of Pompadour situated on the town’s Chateau land with beautifully kept grounds.

Really eat?
We have tried many local restaurants and some further afield. They vary in price and quality but we have a recommended list in the house. The area is famous for Fois Gras. It’s definitely worth trying. We love it!

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Do explore the immediate area as well as further afield. There are wonderful walks and many small, enchanting hamlets and villages to discover. Definitely use the Tourtoirac award winning Boulangerie for your bread and pastries. There isn’t a great deal of English spoken locally but it is fun to try out your French and everyone is very friendly. Body language and guess work seems to work well!

  • Amazing time at the Moulin

    on 02/08/2018

Spacious, very well equipped, beautifully presented, attractive interior. Very good dining terrace as well as an excellent kitchen. Lovely grounds, very good pool and pool toys and river on the doorstep. Delightful and helpful housekeeper. Convenient for local village and local town. An altogether gorgeous family holiday home.

  • Marvellous Property!!!

    on 20/07/2018

The property was all we hoped it would be - it had a very homely feel and there was plenty of space for everyone to find their own corner and a pool to meet up and have fun together. Despite very hot weather, the house was welcomingly cool inside

  • Amazing!

    Created on 19/07/2018

I have been meaning to write to you since our return at the weekend. We had a thoroughly lovely 2 weeks at Le Moulin Charmant. The property had the perfect homely feel that I had been hoping for. It suited our guests of the first week (adult siblings/friends), as well as the second week with the family (including 4 young children). There was somewhere for everyone to retreat to for quiet time, and lots of communal areas for meeting up to eat and drink or swim. There was nothing to fault, and Rebecca was the kindest and most helpful housekeeper that one could want. The weather was very hot but we could all find shady spots to while away the mid day sun, and the outside eating area off the kitchen for supper/BBQ was the place we all loved spending time, so much so that we were hardly tempted to eat out at all.

  • Little slice of heaven on Earth!

    on 27/04/2017

Le Moulin Charmant really is a little slice of heaven on earth... Our group ranged from 2 to 80 years old and everyone loved it equally. The house has been thoughtfully and beautifully decorated and feels like a much loved home rather than a bland holiday let. We found all the bedrooms well laid out and very comfortable, each having it's own bathroom was an added bonus as we were a full house. There are plenty of large seating areas both inside and out where everyone could be together, but if someone felt like a bit of time out (aka a snooze!!) there was always a quiet shady spot to be found - swaying in a hammock by the river being one of the favourites.
There are loads of things to do on site if you can drag yourself away from the sun beds in the beautiful gardens (table tennis, badminton, swimming, plenty of games and puzzles etc.), or you can hop on a hired bicycle and explore the stunning countryside and pretty villages nearby, or make an early morning dash to the award-winning local boulangerie! We found charming local towns, Chateaux and gardens to explore, and delicious restaurants nearby as well. Rebecca the housekeeper is lovely and very helpful, and can provide yummy food if required. Basically, I can't recommend Le Moulin Charmant highly enough, and will definitely be returning to this idyllic spot as soon as I can!
