Overview of Honeymoon Gatehouse

What Oliver loves…

  • The property overlooks an ornamental lake that is fed by the bubbling waters of the Menoire river.
  • Exquisitely furnished with Manuel Canovas wallpapers, Colefax and Fowler fabrics, antique furniture, goose down duvets/pillows and beautiful linen.
  • All rates include a welcome hamper of local delicacies, wine, seasonal fruits, fresh flowers, BBQ fuel and logs for the open fire.

What you should know…

  • It is within the grounds of a boutique hotel.

The Honeymoon Gatehouse was constructed in the 15th Century on the site of an earlier castle and sits within the grounds of the owner's private chateau. It is built of golden stone flanked by four towers; a tributary of the Dordogne River flows through the chateau grounds. The Romanesque town of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne is just 6km away.

The region is known for its wonderful oak, chestnut and walnut woods, foie gras, strawberries, walnuts, cepes, truffles & wine. The gatehouse is ideal for nature lovers and, as its name suggests, is perfect for honeymooning couples as the ‘Brides’ bedroom features a romantic four poster bed. This French holiday home comfortably sleeps 4 adults in its 2 double bedrooms.

Interior & Grounds

The Gate House has its own entrance (separate from the entrance to the chateau), and is approached down an avenue of plain trees, through the large wooden gates into your private paradise. There is a deck for sunbathing or fishing, watching the wildlife, or gazing at the stars.

The house is a three story timber framed building. On the ground floor there is a charming sitting room with windows overlooking the lake, a large inglenook firplace and comfortable sofa and chairs. A round dining table seats four. Off this is a delightful fully equiped kitchen with small breakfast bar all in part of the round tower.

On the first floor there is an intimate sitting room with plasma screen TV, DVD player CD, ipod, books and another deep sofa. Leading off this is a luxurious double bedroom with en-suite WC, bidet and the magical black bathroom with large bath, basin and shower as well as underfloor heating.

Climb the stairs again to the top floor where you will find the unusual barrel vaulted wooden brides bedroom complete wth ethereal four poster bed. This room has four windows making it light and airy. It also has it's own bathroom with WC, bidet, basin and large round rain shower. The house has full central heating, beautiful bedding & towels included.

Map, Location & Local Information

The Gate House is 6km from the Romanesque town of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, situated one and a half hours from Limoges airport, served by Ryanair, two hours west of Bergerac and two hours north of Toulouse.

There is much to do in this area, including Arts and Culture, many festivals, markets, Canoeing on the Dordogne, Fishing, Golf, Hot Air Balloning and Horse Riding. There are also many famous caves and grottos as well as ancient Chateaux.

Your host displays his Barcelona charm and contemporary sense of design in this century-old Chateau. An hour East of Bordeaux and one half-hour from Bergerac, the inn is located near the charming town of Mussidan. This Chambres d'hotes is surrounded by vineyards, truffle and fois de gras. The five course French gourmet meals with organic ingredients should earn the chef a Michelin star. All the bedrooms have new cozy top of the line beds and bathrooms. We can't say enough and can't wait to go back!

The romantic fairy-tale setting, nestling besides the river, with golden colored stone and its towers.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
