As bed-and-breakfasts go, it cuts a striking figure, with its towers and medieval tapestries and ancestral portraits, set among trees imported from around the world in the early 1800s, including American cedars and sequoias. The castle is filled with upholstered chairs, chandeliers, richly decorated wallpaper and fancy clocks. There was…

Overview of Chateau La Moinerie

What Oliver loves…

  • Entertaining spaces abound at this chateau in the Dordogne - a games room, parlour, and the grand staircase will make for a beautiful party.
  • A posh place to work? The library has books in both French and English.
  • The swimming pool has a bird's eye view of the countryside.

What you should know…

  • The chateau is located quite near a road; you can sometimes hear it from the swimming pool.
  • The kitchen is galley style and on the small side - ask about our catering services to make meals easier.
  • Lots of stairs could prove to be a challenge for the elderly, however there are bedrooms on the ground floor and so are most of the living/dining rooms.

Have a grand wedding or family reunion in this masterfully restored chateau in the Dordogne, where the new meets the (very) old. Parts of the castle date back as far as the 5th century, but inside you’ll find both modern fixtures and family antiques. Perched on top of a rock overlooking unspoilt French countryside, you'll feel just like royalty. For a taste of the local character, descend to take a long stroll through the gardens to the nearby village of Lamonzie-Montastruc.

Up to 20 guests can reside in this sprawling, 900 sq metre chateau. Have a high style dinner party together inside the grand banquet hall, or spread out among the 15 hectare park to dine al fresco or lounge by the pool under the French sunshine. Spectacular architectural details abound: like the moat, the turrets, and the 18th Century pigeonnier overlooking the private pool.

This holiday chateau is easily reachable from Bergerac (11 km), the heart of the Dordogne region. There you can shop, dine, or learn about the region's winemaking at the Musee du Vins. Then set off on a tour; dozens of wineries are nestled between Bergerac and your chateau. Pick up many bottles - here you've so much to celebrate!

The Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Event information

Please note any event rental may be subject to additional charges (that will be pre-agreed) on top of the published rental amount. This is to cover the extra costs associated with putting on a wedding. Please contact stephanie@oliverstravels.com for further details.

The château offers an exceptional setting for weddings and events. The total number in residence remains limited to 20, however all events can be set outside in the « cour d’honneur » and in the upper courtyard where 100 to 200 people can fit easily, while dinner can be served under marquees in the upper courtyard for 80 to 100 guests. A dance floor can be installed as well under the marquees.

Starting mid-2016, the 18th century vaulted « grandes cuisines » will be as well in the château basements for your events.

Please note that for all events requiring marquees and special arrangement, we require the services of a wedding planner to coordinate all details.

Another formula can be offered in collaboration with a neighbouring château presenting the option to use a combination of the 2 mansions in the same village, for both lodging and event, without the addition of marquees. Details can be communicated on demand.

Chateau La Moinerie Reviews

  • A hugely relaxing and comfortable stay

Posted by French Entrée magazine on 10/10/2016

Arriving at the château, on first sight it is so beautiful and impressive. Inside, the bedrooms are spacious and well-appointed while the facilities throughout are superb – and the catering for our final meal was exceptional. Exploring the grounds is a must, while the pool area provides extreme relaxation! We enjoyed a hugely relaxing and comfortable stay at Château la Moinerie.

Owner Profile

How long have you owned the property?
We took over the property early 1998 and have done extensive restoration works since then with the support of the Historical Monuments of France.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?

Besides its remarkable architectural features, this house has a generous soul that can be felt from the moment one arrives and that stays long with the guests after they leave.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The chateau is one of the mythical places in the region and its history spans over 1500 years, from the fall of the Roman Empire to today. It has played a role into the Grand History of France, as well as into the local and family history of the region, which adds to its charm.

Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
May 1940, HRH the grand duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg and her family exiled themselves in the chateau, ex-filtrated from Luxembourg in extremis by France before the arrival of the German troops. They remained there for a few months under the protection of a section of Senegalese riflemen, before gaining Portugal… On June 16th 1940, they were joined in the chateau by the last empress-queen of Austria-Hungary Zita of Habsburg, sister of Felix of Bourbon-Parma, husband of Charlotte of Luxembourg. On her way to exile towards Spain via Bordeaux, Zita transited through Montastruc with her 8 children of which her elder son Otto of Habsburg, archduke of Austria.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Enjoy the Dordogne countryside – visit the many châteaux, and if a bit adventurous, canoe down the river – visit some of the local wine producers. We can recommend a few great ones.
Really eat?
Black truffles and foie-gras, with a glass of Pècharmant local red wine, or of Montbazillac.
Really see?
Visit Sarlat, and on the way, the numerous fortresses, troglodytic sites and prehistorical caves of the region. We are near the river that concentrates most of the sites…

What insider tip would you pass-on about the property or the area?
Take the time, slow down and enjoy the small villages, walking back roads and exploring local communities away from the main track.
