Chateau Gastebois has been sitting above the Dropt River for over 400 years, occupying its place on a hill at the centre of the Bordeaux and Bergerac wine regions and between the small market towns of Eymet and Issigeac.

It was built during the reign of Henry IV and the grounds were awarded by the King to the family for loyal service to the court. Its noble past can be felt in the original paneled dining room; the work of the same master craftsman who also worked on many rooms at the Chateau de Versailles. However guests may prefer to dine alfresco on one of the beautiful terraces. The house is filled with antiques, yet feels like a family home which oozes elegant charm and character and plenty of comfort.

Enjoy privacy and tranquility in this meticulously maintained property set in 100 acres of gardens, woodlands, and tended grounds. Within the estate there is a private swimming pool, a tennis court and impressive yoga facilities. Table tennis is provided as well as grassy areas ideal for croquet and badminton. There are several lovely paths for walking within the estate.

First class wineries abound and the hosts are always delighted to organise wine tours or tastings. The area surrounding the house provides a plethora of activities including horse-back riding, canoeing, fishing and boat rides on the Dordogne river. Many historic chateaux are a short drive from the house.

Chateau Gastebois sleeps a maximum of 14 guests in 7 spacious en suite bedrooms.

Chateau Gastebois is 19 km from the Bergerac airport which is serviced by several airports in Europe including London Stansted. The house is a one hour drive from Libourne train station, which is easily accessible from Paris. In addition, the house is an hour and a half drive from Bordeaux and two hours from Toulouse (both have major international airports).  Avis, Hertz, and Eurocar provide rental car services at Bergerac, Bordeaux and Toulouse airports as well as the Libourne train station.

The nearest towns, about a 10 minute drive, are the historic bastide Eymet, and Issigeac, well known for its colourful Sunday morning markets. Guests will find a range of restaurants in each of these towns as well as a post office, pharmacy, banks, petrol stations and well stocked supermarkets.

In the immediate area is a horse riding school, canoeing, fishing in the Dropt and boat tours on the Dordogne. Balloon rides can be arranged as a great way to get a panoramic view of the exquisite Dordogne valley.  A 10 pin bowling alley is 15 minutes by car. Two world class golf courses are within a one hour drive. You will be provided with maps of historic walks showcasing the natural beauty of the region as well as many of the churches, bastides and other buildings of note. The valley is a regular spot for keen biking enthusiasts because of the gently rolling hills. A spectacular son et lumeire show of the re-enactment of the 100 years war battle at Castillon is a short journey by car.

The region boasts the world renowned Bergerac appellation wine area which covers 12,700 hectares. Wine has been produced in the region for well over 400 years. Wine enthusiasts will find similar grapes to those found in the Bordeaux region including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec reds; Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadet whites. Many vineyards welcome visitors and offer tastings. The formal ‘route de vin’ maps out a plan of the vineyards in the area. Contact Oliver's VIP Concierge to arrange tastings and to get winery recommendations. The Dordogne is the supplier of almost half of France’s fine produce including truffles, cepes and foie gras, which are available at the Metairie adjoining the estate.

The area is awash with sightseeing opportunities. Historical chateaux, gardens and bastides are abundant in the region – you will be provided with guides not only to the major sights, but also to the gems that are off the beaten track. A favourite outing for guests is to the prehistoric caves at Lascaux, which is about an hour and a half drive through magnificent emerald green countryside.  Ancient towns such as Sarlat and Perigeux are well known for their cathedrals and are excellent for shopping and antiquing.

Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Owner Profile

Property Owner
We are a French-British family who purchased the 100-acre estate in 1998 from the descendants of the original landowners who built the property around 1600. Knowing the region well, we adored the verdant countryside, magnificent food and wine and the numerous cultural and historic monuments. We viewed scores of properties, where we could entertain family and friends from around the world; we fell in love with the estate the instant we entered the park through the chestnut lined drive. The beauty, tranquillity and privacy were perfect. The chateau itself hadn’t been touched in many, many years: the benefit being that most of the original features were still in place. It took two years to renovate the Chateau, employing the most skilled local artisans to preserve its integrity and add finishes of the highest quality. We are proud to have brought the Chateau back to its former glory and saved for posterity a place of historic significance in the region.

How long have you owned the property?
20 years

What is it about the property you first fell in love with?
Entering through the front gate one feels that time has stopped. The park was very well maintained with ancient cedars, oaks, chestnuts and scores of flora and fauna that the owners had brought back from their travels around the world and have flourished at the property. The beauty, peace and tranquillity of the park and grounds put us under a spell; spending time at the estate is like being in wonderful dream which one doesn’t ever wish to wake from.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The Chateau was built by French nobility between 1580 and 1608. The family belonged to the royal court throughout the entire reign of the French monarchy. Paintings depicting family members with the Kings of France can be seen in the Gallerie des Batailles at Versailles and the Louvre.
The land for the estate, encompassing thousands of hectares, was ceded to the family by Henry IV. The original deed signed by Henry IV can be seen at property. IV. Artisans who designed the panelled state rooms in Le Petit Trianon at Versailles also installed the dining room and library at the Chateau.
Underneath the house is an extensive series of tunnels originally used during the Catholic-Protestant wars that raged in the area. During WWII it served as the centre of the resistance in Southern France. The underground tunnels were used to hide refugees and allied soldiers. Charles de Gaulle and John D. Rockefeller were among the illustrious visitors during the 20th century.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Visit the open markets at in the stunning medieval villages especially Issigeac and Sarlat, canoe or kayak on the Dordogne River, the cleanest in France, take a hot-air balloon ride to best view the spectacular Dordogne River Valley, and horse-back ride through rolling hills and vineyards.

Really eat?
Truffles, artisan goat cheese and foie gras. For vegetarians and vegans we are supplied with delicious product from our chef’s biodynamic farm. Help yourself to a wide variety of luscious fruit from our orchards.

Really see?
15 UNESCO listed sites including the pre-historic cave paintings at Lascaux and Font de Gaume. Delight in the 150,000 boxes hedges at the Jardin de Marqueyssac, laid out by Andre le Notre who designed the gardens at Versaille, marvel at the castles of Beynac and Domme; enjoy the falconry and plethora of memorabilia on display at Josephine Baker’s home, Chateau de Milandes.

Chateau Gastebois felt like home and perfect site for a family reunion and a classic picture of a French manor. Great kitchen, pool, orchard and with plenty of space for everyone - the whole family wants to return next year. Enjoyed all the help and information from JC; including personal help at a French restaurant which made the dinner much more fun. Will return again soon.

Chateau Gastebois is wonderful - somewhere really special and luxurious. The grounds are lovely and the children loved exploring them. We were a group of 5 families with children ranging from 3 months to 3 years - the games room and pool were also a hit. With plenty of communal space, a large kitchen-diner as well as an outside eating area - It was perfect for relaxing and we enjoyed croquet and tennis when feeling a bit more active. JC was friendly and helpful, on hand when needed but not intrusive. All in all, perfect for a group holiday.

My family, including my husband and me and 7 grandchildren ranging from 8 to 14 years, spent a wonderful week at Chateau Gasteboisfor the second year running and we all agree it is a very special place. There is so much to do within the extensive grounds from swimming in the pool, playing tennis on the well maintained court, table tennis, boules and walking in the grounds through the woods surrounding the property or just relaxing. We would like to thank the owners, Jean-Claud and Lisa for allowing us to enjoy their amazing home with us. We shall return in the future.
