What you should know…

  • The beautiful swimming pool is located in a discreet location away from the main house, therefore children need to be supervised at all times.
  • The three bedrooms on the top floor all share one bathroom, perhaps the best place to put all the kids together!
  • The discreet owners (and their dog) usually live on site in a separate cottage with their own entrance. They are there if needed but otherwise respect their guests' privacy.

This home is a part of our Great Value and Heritage Collection!

This is a historic home, and as such:

  • It has probably been standing for over 100 years, which means it's full of historic value and charm but it may also have one or two quirks!
  • Some of the decor and furnishings may not be brand new, but that should not detract from your holiday experience in this unique setting that allows you to take a step back in time!

    Settled in nicely.

  • Chateau de la Cheine - The perfect place for my birthday celebrations

    on 27/11/2019

I recently booked Chateau de la Cheine for my 30th birthday celebrations for five nights in early November. We were 19 adults (30 - 45 years old), and the Chateau easily and comfortably accommodated all of us in its ten spacious bedrooms. With its two large living rooms, dining room, games room and kitchen, there was no shortage of space for everyone to spend time in - which worked out well as we had a couple of rainy days! The Chateau was very well heated and Karen ensured that we were always well stocked with firewood.

I asked Karen to cater my birthday dinner and she cooked us a lovely 4 course meal and made me a birthday cake. On the afternoon of the dinner, she very kindly came and arranged the dining room with lovely white tablecloths, dining settings and candles. The dinner and local wine provided was delicious and reasonably priced (25 per head), and we had plenty of leftovers for the next day too!

There was lots to explore in the area around the Chateau. Bergerac is a lovely town with plenty of excellent restaurants, and of course there are the incredible chateaux, restaurants and vineyards of Bordeaux just a short drive away. (The grounds of the Chateau themselves are also very beautiful and we managed to fit in a few lovely walks and runs.)

All in all, I would highly recommend this Chateau for large groups and for families. Karen and her family are very welcoming, responsive and professional, and the Chateau itself is very good value for money. We definitely hope to come back again in summer!

  • Amazing time!

    on 20/07/2019

We stayed for a week at the Chateau for my husband's 40th birthday and it was perfect. The grounds were beautiful and well kept and the house had a lot of space and fun activities for the whole family. The owner catered a home coocked French meal one night and it was delicious. For the rest of our stay, we had easy access to Bergerac for supermarket runs or lunches in town. She went out of her way to ensure we were confortable and was alzays around to answer any questions or give us advice on what to do in the nearby areas.

  • Unforgettable holidays!

    on 08/07/2019

This house is just outside Bergerac, so you feel like being in the country but close enough to all the major shops and supermarkets. The house is very big, and can easily accommodate up to 20 people. We were 18 in total and had old and young in our group. The pool was a huge hit with the kids, as it was very warm. The kitchen has everything one needs and more. Karen was amazing and gave great tips on places to see and things to do. I would highly recommend this house. Especially if you are big group and need some space. This house offers it all and has all the amenities one requires, washing, cooking enough bathrooms, big living rooms and a great outdoor dining table. This chateau ticks all the right boxes for an unforgettable holiday.

  • Ideal for parties!

    on 26/06/2019

Thank you for making our stay very enjoyable. the accommodation and location of the chateau was perfect for our party of 15, with ages ranging from 2 to 74.
The pool was excellent and we were able to play football and tennis in the extensive ground. We ate outside most evenings at the large table under the gazebo.
We arranged for the proprietor Karen to cook a delicious 3 course meal with wine on evening, which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommended. A wonderful holiday.

  • Great celebration!

    on 13/05/2019

Our stay at The Chateau De La Cheine was amazing and Karen went out of her way to make my sons 30th birthday week so memorable. We were a diverse group, family with grandchildren one of which was a small baby and also university and school friends.
Karen catered three evening meals for us for over 20 people and the food was superb. From the casual barbecue salads to the elaborate birthday dinner such care was taken to include fresh local ingredients and the cheese board and wines were excellent. That night the beautiful flower decorations and candles up the laid table were the perfect finishing touch.
We cannot thank her enough for making our stay as relaxed and enjoyable.

  • Amazing time with friends & family

    on 14/09/2018

We spent a fabulous week in August at Chateau de la Cheine - three ex-schools pals with assorted spouses and teenage offspring. The Chateau is a short drive from Bergerac (and nearby airport) and set in its own spacious grounds, with swimming pool and outdoor dining area. The Chateau itself could easily accommodate 16 of us plus baby, with room (and bathrooms!) to spare. Despite its size and air of French grandeur, we quickly felt at home there. On the ground floor there are several large communal rooms, but because of the excellent weather, we spent most of our waking hours outdoors. There is a large, well-equipped kitchen, as well as a games room where the younger members of the group could play pool (hooray!). There was plenty to see & do nearby - Bergerac and its food market are worth a day's visit in their own right - but, most of the time we preferred to relax by the poolside & enjoy the French countryside. Our host, Karen, lives nearby and was a good source of information and advice about things to see and do. For a small extra charge, and by prior arrangement, Karen cooked us a delicious three course meal (plus wine) on our first night. This was a really welcome start to the holiday as we were all weary from our travels. Highly recommended. Our only suggestion would to be to make sure you book two weeks and not one, to give yourselves time to unwind in this stunning holiday destination.

  • Amazing Holiday!

    on 01/09/2018

The pool is fantastic and all ages enjoyed it. The house is large with good kitchen facilities, but the bathroom facilities could have been better. Beautiful setting, and the gardens were stunning. Enjoyed many an evening in the moonlight.

  • Fantastic stay in June 2018

    on 31/07/2018

We travelled as five families and had a great stay at the Chateau. The owner looked after exceptionally well, even travelling to the local shops one evening when there was an issue with a travel cot. Well worth investing in the home cooked meal on the first night - great value for money and really tasty! Good location for vineyards, medieval villages and a great little theme park called Le Bournat.

  • Wonderful Family Time!

    on 21/07/2018

We had a brilliant time at Chateau De La Cheine. We were celebrating our mother's 80th birthday and had three generations of family there. We all had plenty of room and enjoyed spending time chatting around the pool and eating wonderful meals in the outside space. Fabulous time!

  • Wonderful Stay with my Family!

    on 02/06/2018

A perfect venue for a large group, especially if there are young children. Beautiful grounds to run around in safely and a good sized pool. A kitchen suitable for catering for a large number eating either in the splendid dining room or, weather permitting, in the covered outside dining area. Handy for Bergerac and the many splendid attractions of the Dordogne. The friendly English owners live nearby and Karen's cooking is delightful. A great week spent with family in late May/June, occasional showers (the Dordogne is not a green area for nothing!) but plenty of warm sunshine. A great time was had by all.

  • What can we say!

    on 19/09/2017

We had such a wonderful time at the Chateau. It was a perfect location for our group of 17 friends! The location was wonderful and we had plenty of room for dinners, games and relaxation! The owners, Karen and Clive, were absolutely wonderful. They donated a wild boar for one of our dinners and even helped with our silly group photo! The open space and quiet surroundings of the chateau is perfect for any group or family wanting to get away from it all. The chateau is in good repair and the multiple bathrooms were a must for our group. We would HIGHLY recommend this chateau! Thank you.

  • Remarkable Holiday Home & Area

    on 07/09/2017

We enjoyed a very happy family fortnight at this property. There was plenty of space for our party of 17, including grandparents and three families of children ranging from 3 years to 12. It was lovely that with only two days exception we ate every meal outside at the large shaded table. There was no risk of boredom, as not only the pool was well used but also the ping pong table and other assorted games were put to good use. Bergerac is a charming town with shops, markets twice a week and a good LeClerc supermarket. There are lots of activities and places to see all within easy reach of the chateau. Karen, our landlady, was very helpful with providing information and fun suggestions for the children. We particularly enjoyed half a day’s kayaking down the Dordogne.

  • Great for a Family

    on 02/09/2017

This is a brilliant base for an all age family party. Lovely grounds and swimming pool and an area full of interest and play for all.

  • Highly Recommended

    on 01/09/2017

We had a wonderfully relaxing week. There was Five families, all of which have young children. The house is beautiful and everything we could have wanted. So basically, we didn’t leave! We spent most of our time round the excellent pool and sitting outside the BBQ area. Karen & Clive live nearby and could not have been more helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. I can highly recommend a visit.

  • Great week near bergerac

    on 26/07/2016

Our party of 17 had a fab week at chateau de la cheine nr bergerac in
July 2016. Host Karen treated us really well, the chateau is beautifully located and the facilities were great.
The villa is only 7km from Bergerac but you feel as though you are in rural France. We had bbq, dined alfresco and had table tennis competitions. There were also lazy afternoons by the pool!
I would recommend a stay at this great villa you will have a fabulous holiday like we did

  • Amazing, Welcoming and Comfortable Chateau!

    on 28/10/2014

We had a fabulous stay at Chateau de la Cheine. The house and garden provided flexible, comfortable space for our group of 12 adults and 9 kids. The swimming pool was lovely, clean and cool, the garden had plenty of space to dine, to sunbath and to play, all the bedrooms were comfortable, and the kitchen well equipped. There's lots to do near to the Chateau, and it's a great place to stay. We hope to be back.

  • The chateau was the perfect choice for us

    on 22/08/2014

We had a fantastic holiday at the beautiful Chateau de la Cheine. The chateau was the perfect choice for us. My two sisters and I have 10 children between us, well they are no longer children they are now aged between 18 and 28 and some have regular partners so we wanted lots of bedrooms-the chateau has ten- and a pool and of course wifi, plus its near a town with a great market –Bergerac, not to mention an airport just 15 minutes away with low cost flights. On a per head basis the Chateau was very affordable, less than £200 per person per week.

  • I could not recommend the Chateau more highly!

    on 20/08/2014

As you know we had a wonderful week.
For our family this was a particularly special week - it being my parents Golden Wedding. In many ways that increases the expectations that everyone has of the place we are staying and how the week will go.
The Chateau was an exceptionally good place to spend a week as an extended family. There was enough space for all of us despite our very varied ages. The pool was a delight, and it was far enough from the house that the youngest children were easy to keep under observation. The gardens were big enough for games of manhunt and the table tennis table added to the afternoon games. Eating outside in a space where we were comfortable as a group of 21 is a tough expectation, but it was perfectly met. We had one particularly wonderful evening when we celebrated my parents wedding anniversary.
The rooms were all lovely. The all exuded delightful french charm with lovely views. There was plenty of space. Again, having a games room inside was a pleasure - one the children of all ages enjoyed.
We know the area around Bergerac fairly well, but even so, it was great to spend time in this most lovely part of France.
Overall, we were very well looked after in what was a perfect place for our family celebrations. I could not recommend the Chateau more highly.
