Interior & Grounds

Chateau Interior
Bedrooms
There are four large bedrooms over two floors.

The master bedroom (30 sq m) is a lovely dual aspect room with super king size bed and exposed beams on ceiling and walls. There is a magnificent open fireplace in the bedroom and a door leading directly to the upper garden. This is a fantastic place to watch the early morning wildlife as you look over the pool.

Bedroom 2 (30 sq m) is also on this floor. It has twin beds and is also dual aspect, overlooking the front and side gardens.

The main bathroom has been recently refitted to include a modern white bathroom suite, comprising a bath and a powerful walk-in shower.

On the top floor there are two further bedrooms and bathroom.

Bedroom 3 (25 sq m) has a double bed and a single bed (sleeping 3) and a football table.

Bedroom 4 (20 sq m) has 2 sets of twin beds (sleeping 4), a small TV, video recorder and a PS1 with games. There is a travel cot available if required.

The second modern bathroom comprises of a white bathroom suite with an in-bath shower.

Kitchen/Dining Room
The large traditional farmhouse Kitchen/Dining Room is a perfect area to unwind during a long French lunch. Traditional features include a vast open fireplace with wood burning stove and exposed beamed walls and ceiling. The Dining Room table seats up to ten. Appliances include an electric cooker with gas hob, American fridge freezer, microwave, washer-dryer and dishwasher.

Living Room
The main living room is some 30 sq metres but retains a cosy feel with a wood burning stove. It is a lovely cool room in summer but very warm and comfortable in winter. It has a large 42" TV with British television if you fancy a night in after a day in the sun, and a CD player and DVD player/recorder. The French doors open out onto the extensive gardens.

Outside Grounds
The Aillac Farmhouse is set in 7 acres of meadows and woodland and is the perfect choice for those seeking peace and tranquillity. The 10x5m swimming pool, situated in the south facing back garden, is for the exclusive use of guests and is completely private.  The pool is well placed to enjoy sun all day whilst relaxing in the peaceful surroundings.  There are plenty of outside eating areas, in the sun and in the shade. There is a large lawn area and neighbouring meadow and woods to explore. At the front of the farmhouse there are ample shady spots to park several cars.

There is a rich variety of flora and fauna in the grounds, including many different types of birds, toads, salamanders, lizards, wild deer and rabbits. The Sweet Chestnut tree has a resident Green Woodpecker nesting, and the Blue and Great tits have made a home of the wall by the table. If you fancy a bit of exercise, there are plenty of established walkways in the surrounding countryside.

Map, Location & Local Information

Aillac farmhouse is located in a small hamlet of houses 2km away from the beautiful village of St. Pierre de Frugie.  It is found halfway between Limoges and Perigueux, on the edge of the Dordogne, bordering the Limousin.  The farmhouse is set within the Parc Naturel du Perigord-Limousin and surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Limoges Airport is located approximately 40 minutes away. Calais is a 6-7 hour drive.

The towns of La Coquille and Chalus - where Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded - are nearby. The prehistoric caves at Les Eyzies and old towns such as Rocamadour, Bergerac, and St. Emilion are within reasonable distance.

There are several medieval market towns within easy driving distance of the farmhouse.  Thiviers has a traditional farmers' market and Piegut has a market every Wednesday where you can buy fresh fish, oysters, and local produce.  Nontron, the principal town of the Perigord Vert, is not very far away. It has ancient ramparts and a fine square from the 18th century. Visit the chateau at Jumilhac le Grand to experience spectacular views.

The local produce of the area includes foie gras, truffles, cepes, confit, and clafoutis. Guests will find Cep wild mushrooms growing in the farmhouse garden. Local wines cover all budgets from Bergerac to St. Emilion, and Pineau to Cognac. The vineyards in Bordeaux and distilleries in Cognac are well worth a day out.

Aillac Farmhouse is 40 minutes from the cities of Limoges and Perigueux. Between them you will find the usual tourist attractions, caves, chateaux, churches, aquariums, war memorials and museums.

The town of Brantome, known as 'The Venice of the Perigord Vert', offers a lovely day out: perhaps try canoeing in the picturesque setting, followed by a picnic.

There are plenty of fun days out in the local region, including velo-railing (an unusual experience of biking on train tracks), quad biking, karting, and Acrobois (acrobatics in the woods). There are various swimming lakes in the vicinity of the farmhouse, and plenty of private lakes for fishing.

The Region

The pace of life in the Dordogne is languid, laid back and positively infectious. Relax in bucolic beauty as you drift along the Dordogne River, or wander among the forests and hillside of the Périgord Natural Park.

The foodie scene too, is a relaxed affair. Take your time over your lazy lunches of local duck, black truffles and goats cheese. If you’re feeling energetic, you can even hunt for them yourself. The wine here is second to none, with infamous grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chenin Blanc all having a huge presence here.

The Dordogne is also brimming with history. Castles and chateaux are scattered throughout the region, among the enchanting medieval villages. History of an altogether more ancient sort can also be explored in the incredible prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux and Grotte de Rouffignac.

Reviews for Aillac Farmhouse

Aillac Farmhouse Reviews

  • C Pryor

Posted by Caroline P on 01/09/2015

We (two families with four children aged 3-10) spent a week at Aillac Farmhouse in late August 2015. It was a lovely week. The farmhouse is very spacious and very comfortably furnished. There is ample seating for everyone in the inside and outside living and eating areas. The kitchen is very well equipped with plenty of crockery and cutlery etc. The bathrooms are modern and there was always plenty of hot water. The towels were large and fluffy and the beds comfortable.

We were greeted by an English house keeper and made to feel very welcome.

The house is situated in beautiful, peaceful countryside. There is a play park nearby and a choice of supermarkets and small towns a short drive away. We also visited Perigueux, Brantome and the caves of the Vézère valley.

If there was one thing I could change, it would be the pool. As it is unheated and the weather was cool when we arrived, it was very cold. By the middle of the week, once the temperature outside was back up to the late 20's and into the 30's, we couldn't get the children out of it!

    A wonderful place to stay.
