Overview of Chateau Cayac

What Oliver loves…

  • The chateau’s pool is shaded by trees and sits next to a large ivy-covered pergola.
  • The River Lot is calm, perfect for swimming or fishing. A rowing boat and kayak are provided for your use.
  • The lively Thursday evening summer market in Fongrave feels like a party!

What you should know…

  • There’s a great selection of bikes (including two tandems!), but you need to bring your own helmets.
  • No smoking in the property.

Swim, fish and kayak on the serene River Lot from Chateau Cayac, a luxury chateau in Aquitaine with its own jetty and direct river access. This house on the edge of a pretty village sits within 5 acres of private gardens with mature trees. With its round turreted staircase and balconied landing, the chateau is a fairytale setting. Enjoy a large heated swimming pool, covered outdoor dining on the tiled terrace, table tennis, a full-size pool table and Satellite TV.

The chateau’s interior has been lovingly restored and refurbished to provide luxury accommodation. The 7 bedrooms, most with en-suite bathrooms, are furnished with a mix of antique and contemporary furniture and decorated to a high standard. There’s also a cottage available to rent if you bring staff or want more flexibility for sleeping arrangements.

You’re just steps from the village of Fongrave, which has a small shop, post office and restaurant. The Lot et Garonne region is famous for plum trees, so make sure to find locally grown prunes dipped in chocolate. In the mood to sightsee? Villeneuve-sur-Lot, a 20-minute drive, has arcaded shops, a historic church and medieval architecture.

This riverside chateau is 45 minutes from the Bergerac airport.

Interior & Grounds

There are 7 bedrooms inside the chateau: 4 doubles, 2 triples and 1 suite sleeping 4. There are 6 en-suite bathrooms. The rooms are furnished with a mixture of french antique and good quality contemporary furniture, finished to a very high standard.

The owners appreciate that sometimes older children do not want to share a room or that some guests bring their au pairs, cooks or grandparents who may prefer to sleep independently. In order to give more flexibility of  sleeping arrangements the cottage is available to rent by the guests staying at the Chateau, by prior arrangement. There is a double bedroom and a bedroom with 3 single beds. There is a separate lounge area, bathroom and kitchen also. Please note that a small additional charge is made for the use of the cottage and the maximum number of guests remains at 18.

Facilities include:
- 12x6m heated swimming pool
- Fenced and alarmed close to the Chateau with views over the river. - Private Jetty.
- Direct access to the River Lot.
- Table tennis table.
- Full size pool table.
- Satellite TV.
- Large south facing terrace overlooking the River.
- Bed linen and towels included.
- Fishing Boat and Canoe.
- There are numerous good quality bikes for guests to use, including two tandems!
- The Chateau sits within 5 acres of private gardens with mature trees and lawns.

Map, Location & Local Information

The chateau is walking distance to the village that contains restaurants, shops and bar. It is 45 minutes from Bergerac Airport and 1.5 hours from Bordeaux  Airport.

In the village there is a small restaurant serving very good value meals (approx 18 -20 euros for 3 courses), with a menu that changes daily. The restaurant is only a short walk from the chateau. The Chateau housekeeper is an excellent cook and with prior arrangement she will be happy to cook the occasional meal for all the guests. Various menu choices and prices available on request. Please contact Oliver's VIP Concierge to arrange.

There is a large fishing shop close to the town of Villeneuve sur lot which is a 20 min car journey. To fish at the Chateau you must purchase a holiday license: it's only a few euros and you can buy one at the village shop. We have a small rowing boat for our guests to use, which is ideal for fishing. Or you can fish from the jetty.

The lot et garonne is a beautiful, peaceful region of France. The land is farmed and famous for its plum trees and the production of prunes. Fresh, locally grown produce is available from the farm shop or from the local weekly markets. During July and August the village comes alive with the Thursday evening market, an enjoyable evening of dancing, music and enjoying the delicious local produce. This is an experience not to be missed. You can purchase locally grown and reared food and have it cooked for you straight away. Locals and visitors all dine together on long tables while enjoying an evening of music.

The Chateau is on the banks of the lovely river Lot, which is excellent for fishing and canoeing. The area around the chateau is ideal for cycling and there are many small bastide towns to explore.

The pretty village of Fongrave is just a 5 minute walk from the Chateau. With only 900 occupants the village is traditional and authentic. There is a post office, church and a small shop which stocks the daily necessities along with fresh bread and croissants each morning. Attached to the shop is The Beau-Rivage, a small bar/restaurant serving delicious traditional French food.

Chateau Cayac Reviews

  • Best ever French experience!

    Posted by Glencoe on 16/04/2014

Had 9 wonderful days with a group of amazing people. The location and facilities allowed us to have a complete French experience from bike riding in the country side, village markets and tasting local farm produce. Several villages close by with great restaurants.

Chateau has a beautiful outlook over the Lot River and is fitted out with a great kitchen which allowed us to cook up some amazing French food. Accommodation was great including the cottage.

Would highly recommend if thinking of a complete French experience with a group of friends!

  • The Perfect Place for Everyone

    Posted by Noels on 16/04/2014

My husband and I were very fortunate to be able to spend a week in the Chateau renewing old aquaintances and making new friends whilst there. We have travelled to France a number of times with this being our first "Chateau experience". What a delightful place to stay. It was beyond our expectations. So many activites within the property itself such as bike riding, swimming, badminton, table tennis, soccer or plenty of opportunities to explore the local surrounds by foot, bike or a short drive to many other places of interest such as Fumel where we had a beautiful late lunch of nicoise salad along with a glass of local rose at the creperie. There is also an abundance of places for some quiet time to read or just relax by the Lot River.

There are local markets close by and across the road is the farmers stall which had amazing produce that we used in our daily culinary creations cooked in the impressive gas stove or on the BBQ by the pool.

Definitely the place to spend some quality time with family and friends. Hopefully not our our last "Chateau experience". The perfect place for everyone.

  • The chateau was an absolute dream

I would just like to say what an amazing week we all had in France. The chateau was an absolute dream and when we pulled into the drive for the first time I was absolutely blown away by how beautiful it was. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to stay in your stunning chateau with its breathtaking location.

  • Will be highly recommending the chateau

Posted by Family T on 12/08/2010

I wanted to contact you to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the chateau. We had such great intentions of travelling all around the region on day trips but were just as happy to stay beside the pool and enjoy all the home's amenities. All in all we had a wonderful holiday and will be highly recommending the chateau to all out friends.

  • 'The Princess Castle'

Posted by Archie Forbes Adam & Family on 11/08/2010

Having just returned from the chateau everyone in our party agreed that they'd had the holiday of a lifetime. The setting for the chateau is incredibly idyllic and Angela and Steve had thought of every little detail to make our stay perfect. It is one of the most heavenly spots I have ever stayed at, the only downside was leaving! I cannot wait to return as my 3 year old daughter called it 'the princess castle' and this time for hopefully longer than a week.

  • We had a fantastic holiday

Posted by Murray Family on 06/08/2010

We had a fantastic holiday in your wonderful chateau. It was certainly the best we have stayed in yet, with so many lovely touches to make our break run smoothly. We very much hope to return, I can't wait to go back. We were considering staying on for a third week - it was so relaxing! Well thank you for allowing us to share your beautiful home and thank you for the welcoming flowers, wine etc. It feels strange not to have met you when we have enjoyed your hospitality from afar.

  • We had an absolutely lovely time

Posted by Nesbitt & Neild Family on 06/08/2010

We had an absolutely lovely time, everyone agreed that the chateau was so spacious and comfortable and we wouldn't change a thing. There is so much to do and it's so beautiful. It's hard to imagine anywhere that caters so well for every age group.

  • We had a fantastic time at the chateau

Posted by Brannigan Family on 06/08/2010

We had a fantastic time at the chateau, it was the ideal place to stay with a large family and had everything we needed. All in all, we had a wonderful time, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the chateau to friends.

Owner Profile

Property Owner
Angela & Steve

How long have you owned the property?
10 years.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The Riverside location and the close proximety of the village of Fongrave.

What’s the strangest or most difficult guest request you’ve ever received?
A gentleman from the States asked my gardener if he could come and trim the few blades of grass around the pond edge because " it was offending his soul." Of course, we obliged and sorted it straight away!

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?

Go to the evening farmers Market in the village. Also, get out on the Kayak and see the area from the river.

Really eat?
Confit de Canard and also the locally grown prunes covered in chocolate.

Really see?
Nothing beats sitting on the South facing terrace of the Chateau and looking out over the garden, the swimming pool and the Lot river. I advise all my clients to relax and enjoy the unique atmosphere at the Chateau.

Lastly, what insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
If you are looking for a property that meets the needs of a large, mixed age group of family and friends, Chateau Caillac will be perfect for your holiday. Beautiful, luxury accomodation that still feels like home set in the quiet relaxing Lot et Garonne. Difficult to beat.
