Wellington Manor was a truly special place to get married and we had an amazing day. The food was sensational and the staff were lovely. Our guests all enjoyed the little touches that made the wedding different. So many people have told us it was the best wedding they had…

Overview of Wellington Manor

What Oliver loves…

  • There is a fishing lake on the grounds so there is no need to wander too far from home.
  • The beds are so comfortable guests will have difficulty getting up.
  • The large living rooms are great for entertaining. There is even a party room fitted out with a disco system and 60" plasma TV.

What you should know…

  • Despite its rural location, it is within a old industrial town.
  • Wi-fi only works in certain areas of the house.

Wellington Manor is an impressive, elegant, Palladian style villa set in four acres of wonderfully landscaped grounds centering on the mill stream alongside a once thriving, but now silent, mill.

Built by Thomas Fox in 1797, the house and gardens have been carefully restored by the current owners. The house sleeps up to 21 guests.

Interior & Grounds

Ground floor: Entrance through the grand (40ft) Hall. Off the Hall is a fully equipped Kitchen together with a scullery and jam room. The drawing and dining rooms are where guests can unwind in comfort and style with a roaring log fire, amid many antiques and family portraits. The more energetic can retire to the Long Room for a game of table tennis or pool.

First floor: There are 10 bedrooms (and 6 shower/bathrooms) all reflecting fascinating, different aspects of the history of the house and family. They are comfortably furnished, with sumptuous beds. 3 bedrooms have en suite facilities, 3 attic rooms, 2 twins and 1 walk through room. The 11th bedroom is the ivy clad Old Laundry, a charming, very large bedroom suite with a gallery and its own bathroom. In total the house has 10/11 bedrooms & 7 bath/shower rooms.

Map, Location & Local Information

The options are virtually endless, but here are some of the more popular choices:

A massage is just the thing to soothe away stress! The masseurs come to the house for a minimum of 3 hours, for treatment in either hour or half hour increments.

Archery, laser clay and pistol shooting can be arranged in the grounds. This is ideal for guests short of time or those that don’t fancy driving further afield.

If guests don’t mind a scenic drive down to Exmoor, there is nothing more exhilarating than horse riding on the hills. This can be combined with fly fishing and clay shooting as all three are quite near each other. There is also the prospect of meeting up afterwards for a pub lunch to tempt everyone out of the house.

On the entertainment front, the casino night is very popular and is strictly for fun since the owners do not have a gaming licence. A murder mystery or a wide range of musicians, from a solo pianist to a ceilidh or from bluegrass to dinner jazz and anything in between can also be arranged.

Hire your own sports complex: The property has a private arrangement with a local public school to hire their facilities over weekends. If guests fancy a cricket pitch for some 20:20 fun with tea in the pavilion, fabulous tennis and squash courts or fencing in the salon with coach and Olympic champion Gyorgy Felletar, the sports hall is a perfect choise. The sports hall can be hired by the hour for 5-a-side football, badminton or basketball.

Cooking skills: Chefs can assist guests in a fun experience producing a meal. The Thai course is very popular.

Golf: The owners can direct guests to excellent parkland, championship and links courses all within 5-10 miles of the property.

Walking: A gentle stroll or a more energetic hike up a hillside are both options that usually have a pub along the way. There are maps and guided walks at the houses, and the owners can send the information to guests before they arrive.

Quantock Hills, the home and inspiration to the writers Wordsworth and Coleridge and also home for the oldest breed of wild pony is glorious for walking, especially down Dead Woman’s Ditch.

The Blackdown Hills is an area of outstanding natural beauty and the West Country's best kept secret.

Exmoor, including Lorna Doone country, Tarr Steps. All are beautiful areas to explore. The owners can recommend an excellent natural river pool to swim in the summer at OS grid ref. 3286.

Surfing: The owners can direct guests to great spots or arrange excellent private tuition for a group including all equipment.

Branscombe Beach on the south coast near Lyme Regis is a romantic, wonderful, shingle beach. Early summer evening barbecues on the beach are also highly recommended.

Saunton Sands near Barnstaple, north Devon, is a two mile stretch of lovely, soft, sandy beach. Around the corner is the popular surfing beach Croyde Bay and Woolacombe Sand. Roads around this area can get busy in the peak summer months.

Catering & Services

We believe in helping to arrange probably the best big house party guests will ever attend or host. We fuss over everything, ensuring that all these elements are of a high, consistent standard.

From the crisp table linen and sheets to the log fire laid ready to put a match to, we think the extra effort is worth it to ensure our guests arrive to a wonderfully warm, spotlessly clean house, full of character and atmosphere - a real home from home.

Our obsession with cleanliness, combined with spacious houses and lovely surroundings, makes a huge difference to the quality and feeling of the holiday.

We can enhance our guests' stay with a range of catering from larder supplies and ready to serve meals or provide a fully served dinner for a special occasion.

We can also arrange activities for guests to enjoy – riding, shooting, archery, off-roading, massage and pampering – just to name a few.

We have built our reputation on the meals we provide. It’s an integral part of our business. All the meals are homemade by talented local chefs who come to the house just for the occasion they are booked. We offer a variety of menus from a simple, hearty, two course, self-service meal, to a more formal, fully served and cleared dinner. All are made from the best available local produce wherever possible.

  • Amazing people and house

    Posted by on 16/09/2014

We had a blissful time. Everyone pitched in, much fun, love and good food. The key was the people (of course) and this amazing house. It did the work!! Thank you to our hosts, Peter and the team.

  • You are immersed in a different world

Posted by Chamberlain Group on 21/08/2014

It is not the simplest of tasks finding accommodation for 26 people that gives ample opportunity for mingling yet lets everyone feel like they have their own space, but Wellington Manor delivers on both counts. It is a very special place and for however long you stay you are immersed in a different world, which is both relaxing and luxurious. And the party room is a really nice touch too! I cannot recommend Wellington Manor highly enough along with all the team that make the booking anything but difficult.

  • We had a fantastic time at the house.

Posted by Chamberlain group on 17/06/2014

It is an incredible place and the facilities just made the whole thing easy; something not generally associated with feeding and sleeping that many people.

  • Absolutely immense

Posted by Kay group on 17/06/2014

The house itself is beautiful, old and interesting - a proper taste of Georgian manor life. Plenty big enough, loads of space and lots of different rooms to explore and hang out in. We had a hog roast in the grounds one day which was laid on perfectly, with hay bales and torches and a garden bar under the tree. For a slice of luxury country living in the UK you really can't beat this place. Will definitely go back one day, can't recommend it enough.

  • We will definitely recommend you to all our friends.

Wellington Manor is a fantastic house run by a fantastic company.

Many thanks for arranging the shooting, fishing and 3 course dinner.

  • Amazing, amazing, amazing - beyond perfect!

Posted by Tylen Group on 19/11/2013

The property is maintained to a very high standard, the rooms are all very large and the garden is also fantastic. The games room is great to keep adults and kids entertained regardless of the weather and the dining room is the perfect one for a dinner with that many people around the table. The owner Peter was also very friendly and flexible. Excellent service! I highly recommend this place to anyone who is organizing a gathering, with or without children. I just can't wait until I have another excuse to go back to Wellington myself!

  • Pre-Christmas Celebration

Posted by claire bendall on 10/05/2013

Dear Wellington Manor – We’ve been enjoying a friends pre-Christmas celebration for over 20 years now and stay at houses around the Country each year. Our ‘Clan’ grows larger each year and we need bigger and bigger houses. This is our first trip here and the size and space has been perfect – all ages seated together in the red dining room: all ages dancing together in the party room: chill out spaces for those who’d had too much of it all.

The house becomes part of our memory and this year it’s been a fantastic element.

Thanks from all of us – from Georgia the youngest to Dean the oldest and all of us in-between.

Posted by Anon . on 15/01/2013

We were a lucky group of friends and family to be invited to celebrate Barney's 40th in such style. Wellington Manor with its understated luxury where everything had been thought of created the perfect scene to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Cocktails on the lawn, candle-lit dinners, breakfast in light-filled rooms and croquet (rules somewhat flexible). If this is what being 40 means, bring it on!
